JUSTIN — The Denton Lady Broncos struggled against stout competition for the second straight day at the Northwest ISD Classic.
A thrilling victory over Parish Episcopal (25-14, 23-25, 25-22) was the highlight in between two losses to Vandegrift (22-25, 25-23, 22-25) and Saginaw Boswell (22-25, 22-25) on Saturday.
Taylor Thomas led the Lady Broncos with 28 kills and 48 digs on the day as setter Abby Folsom served up 52 assists. Leah Stolfus also contributed 27 kills, while Sydney Soto totaled 20 kills and 39 digs.
The tough competition should benefit Denton in the long run as the Lady Broncos seek a deep playoff run this season. According to the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, Saginaw Boswell is the No. 10 team in Class 5A.
Denton is now 13-6 on the season with a home match against Frisco Memorial approaching on Tuesday.
Ponder finishes eighth in Glen Rose tournament
GLEN ROSE — The Lady Lions started off the day taking Lorena to the final set before falling to the No. 5 team in Class 4A 26-24, 19-25, 22-25.
Despite the loss, Ponder created momentum with two straight set victories over Monahans (25-17, 25-21) and Andrews (25-17, 25-21) before a 18-25, 22-25 loss to Saginaw ended the Lady Lions tournament.
Harper Mulkey led all Lady Lions with 28 kills, with teammate Sterling Wilkinson adding another 20 kills and 35 digs. Kylee Anderson collected a team-high 45 digs, and Averee Tipton finished with 80 assists.
Ponder finished 5-3 on the weekend to improve their record to 5-6. The Lady Lions will play at Lindsay on Tuesday.
Pilot Point goes 2-2 on final day of Graham tournament
GRAHAM — Following a successful first day at the Graham tournament, the Pilot Point Lady Bearcats continued to roll with wins over Abilene High (25-21, 25-23) and Jacksboro (25-14, 25-16) to move themselves in a position to win the tournament.
However, the Lady Bearcats ran into a couple of programs with pedigree and tradition in the final two matches of the day. Pilot Point suffered crushing defeats to Amarillo Caprock (25-17, 25, 8) and Brock (25-3, 25-7) as the tournament wound down.
Alyssa David slammed down 34 kills to lead the Pilot Point offense, while Shelby Malone provided 34 digs on the day. Brooke Lane also contributed 24 digs for the Lady Bearcats.
Pilot Point finished the weekend 5-3 and improved their record to 8-8 on the season. The Lady Bearcats will continue non-district play on Tuesday at Aubrey.
