Tuesday practice notes

North Texas running backs coach Patrick Cobbs watches as one of his players goes through drills on Tuesday at the Darrell R. Dickey Football Practice Facility.

A host of position battles continued to unfold on Tuesday, when North Texas coach Seth Littrell and his players were available to talk about what transpired during their first full scrimmage of fall workouts over the weekend.

UNT's defense had a great day in the scrimmage on Saturday. We'll cover that in a story that will appear in tomorrow's paper. Before we get to it, here are a few notes and thoughts on what transpired today.

Perhaps the most interesting news tidbit to come out of today's post practice discussion was a general update on where the race between Jason Bean and Austin Aune for the backup quarterback job stands.

Littrell said both are still competing following what was a particularly good scrimmage for Bean. The redshirt freshman guided UNT to touchdowns on three of his four possessions.

He was up second in team drills today.

"It’s been back and forth," Littrell said. "They are still growing and getting more comfortable in the system."

UNT will let that battle and a few others play out over the next several days.

"We are letting guys go out there and compete and show their coaches why they should be in there and how they can help us be successful," Littrell said. "I feel really good about some of our young guys who are farther along than I thought they would be.

"We are still trying to see how everyone fits on the depth chart."

And in other news and notes ...

-- Senior running back Loren Easly didn't participate in UNT's scrimmage but is getting more and more live work in drills as he works his way back from a torn ACL. He broke a long run in team drills today.

-- The Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs both had scouts in today.

-- UNT has a few players who were banged up over the last few days and in Saturday's scrimmage. Fortunately, no one has gone down with an injury that will keep them out for an extended period.

And finally, a few plays that stood out ...

-- Mason Fine threw a perfect deep ball to Rico Bussey Jr. in team drills. The two later hooked up for a touchdown in the red zone.

-- Wide receiver Jaelon Darden made a nice move and caught a touchdown pass in the red zone in one-on-one drills and came back to catch a deep ball later in practice.

-- DeShawn Gaddie intercepted a pass from Aune in team drills.

-- Greg White made a diving touchdown catch in the red zone on a pass from Bean.

-- Freshman wide receiver Khatib Lyles made an impressive catch in drills with wide receivers and defensive backs on the field.

-- Jyaire Shorter had a rare drop in the end zone. He's been terrific throughout fall camp.

-- Wide receiver Kealon Jackson lost a shoe while returning punts.

-- Safety Khairi Muhammad and linebacker Tyreke Davis combined to make a nice stop on Nic Smith in team drills.

-- Taylor Jacobs, Gabriel Murphy and Davis all had good reps in pass rush drills.

-- Kicker Ethan Mooney hit one of two pressure kicks with the whole team watching at the end of practice.
