UNT linebacker commit story

Jacobi Johnson’s recruiting trip to North Texas a few days ago was a family affair.

The Midwest City (Okla.) linebacker brought his little brother along. His mother couldn’t make it, so he called her and let her talk to linebackers coach Galen Scott and running backs coach Patrick Cobbs, the assistants who recruited him.

By the end of his stay, Johnson was convinced UNT was the right fit. He announced his decision to play for the Mean Green on his Twitter account Wednesday night and talked about the reasons behind his choice a short time later.

“When I went down there, it felt like home,” Johnson said. “They treated my little brother like he was a recruit.”

Johnson, who is 6-4 and 225 pounds, is listed as a three-star recruit by 247Sports. The site lists him at No. 71 in its composite rankings of the top outside linebacker recruits in the class of 2020.

Brown also was offered scholarships by New Mexico State and Cornell. He could end up playing any of the three linebacker spots in UNT’s 3-3-5 scheme, depending on the way he develops.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The early signing period begins Dec. 18, with national signing day Feb. 5.

UNT only entered the picture in Johnson’s recruiting process in the last three weeks after Mean Green coaches saw him play during Midwest City’s spring practices.

Johnson’s courtship with UNT progressed quickly from there.

“Christian Lee reached out to me right away and had been talking to me about coming,” Johnson said of the Friendswood tight end who has been actively recruiting for UNT since committing to the Mean Green in early April.

The more Johnson thought about continuing his career at UNT, the more he liked the idea.

“My parents can come to my games,” Johnson said. “It’s close. Plus, I know some of the players on the team and some of the other guys they are recruiting.”

Johnson didn’t have long to get to know UNT’s coaches and learn about the program. That didn’t matter to him.

“After I went down there and saw everything, I wanted to lock up the spot,” Johnson said.

Johnson is the 13th member of UNT’s 2020 class, which is currently ranked No. 1 in Conference USA by 247Sports. Each member of the class is rated as a three-star prospect by the site.
