North Texas resumed practice on Monday following its first scrimmage of fall drills.
Saturday's workout was closed to the media. The first practice after a closed scrimmage is always interesting.
One can see where players are slotted in terms of the first, second and third teams. It's also pretty apparent how healthy a team is coming out of a live workout.
UNT had a few players dinged up but looked good from an injury standpoint.
What continued to be far more interesting is how UNT is lining up. There was an assumption entering fall practice that a host of highly regarded late-arriving transfers and freshmen would make a run at starting.
A few have.
Linebacker Kevin Wood seems like a lock to land a spot on the depth chart as a backup outside linebacker. Cornerback DeShawn Gaddie, cornerback Nick Harvey and nickel Dominque Harrison are all in line to win backup jobs as well.
What we haven't seen, at least not so far, is a member of UNT's incoming high school recruiting class crack the starting lineup. Veterans KD Davis and Tyreke Davis are holding down starting jobs at linebacker.
Cam Johnson and Quinn Whitlock look like UNT's starting cornerbacks. Both are veteran players who have been in the program. Whitlock arrived in time for spring practice and has been with the program for a few months. They have held off Harvey so far.
That's not to say that some of UNT's top incoming freshmen and late-arriving transfers won't make an impact.
What one has to remember is that making the transition from high school to college isn't easy. It's a process, one that can take a few months or even a season.
Top high school players often get by on their athleticism. Everyone has that high-end talent at the college level.
Technique matters. So does experience.
UNT brought in one of its best classes in years last fall. Just don't assume that those players will come in and start right away.
And in other news and notes ...
-- UNT began another week of fall practice without junior college defensive end David Sow. There is still a chance he will join the team later this fall, but time is running out in terms of him arriving in time to make an impact this season.
-- Offensive lineman D'Andre Plantin is expected to be cleared to be a full participant in practice later this week.
-- The Cowboys and Buccaneers had scouts at practice today.
-- Freshman defensive end Kenneth Dotson is quickly getting up to speed and spent part of practice working with UNT's second-team defense.
-- Caleb Colvin is working with UNT's first-team defense at defensive end.
-- Running back Tre Siggers has looked good in short-yardage situations and is settling in after moving back over from safety.
And finally, a few plays that stood out ...
-- Mason Fine hit Rico Bussey Jr. on a perfectly thrown deep shot in drills with wide receivers and defensive backs on the field.
-- Safety Jameel Moore intercepted a pass from Fine in the red zone.
-- Jyaire Shorter caught a back-shoulder throw for a touchdown from Fine.
