Rylan Smart made the opening day of the UIL state track meet one to remember on Thursday.

The Sanger standout won the Class 4A discus with a toss of 173 feet, 3 inches. Smart was one of more than two dozen Denton area athletes who competed on the first day of the meet.

Class 4A and 3A schools were up on the first day of the event.

Smart, who has signed with Abilene Christian, improved his distance on his second through fourth attempts and posted his best mark on the last throw in that series.

Andrew Huff of Stafford finished second with a toss of 171-11.

The Argyle boys team finished second in the team standings after earning medals in a relay and an individual event. The Eagles 1,600-meter relay team of Jaaqwan Felton, Lane Stewart, Parker Phillips and RJ Bunnell finished third in a time of 3:19.90.

Mitchell Thompson finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 15-0 for the Eagles, who finished with 31 points. Wimberly won the Class 4A boys title with 56 points.

The Argyle girls finished second in the 800-meter relay. The Eagles team of Ja’Liyah Patterson, Hailee Janzen, Trinity Carter and Keira Inman posted a time of 1:40.61 and set a new school record.

Argyle finished just behind Dallas Carter.

Addison Hite of Pilot Point also came home with a medal on a night she competed in the 800 and 1,600 at the Class 3A level. Hite finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:20.08.
