SAVOY -- Jacob Helzer accounted for five touchdowns and the Calvary Lions opened the 2018 football season Thursday night with a 47-30 victory over the Savoy Cardinals.
Helzer scored on runs of 20, 42 and 65 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Lions racked up 391 yards in total offense with Helzer finishing with 24 rushing attempts for 230 yards. Beck Hillman had four rushes for 61 yards and caught one pass for 42 and scored twice. Derek King caught a eight-yard scoring toss from Helzer to complete the Calvary scoring.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 18-6 first quarter lead before Calvary scored 21 unanswered points to take a 27-17 halftime lead.
Brice Coffey, King and Brandon Overton led the defensive effort for Calvary with seven tackles each.
Calvary returns to action next Friday when they face Lewisville Lakeland at 7:30 p.m. at Ryan High School.
