Thanks largely to one Dallas-Fort Worth golfer’s hot start, Argyle resident Marcus Jones and a trio of current or former Argyle Eagles have some catching up to do after Thursday’s first round of the 110th Texas Amateur at Dallas Athletic Club.

Jones shot a first-round 72, putting him eight strokes behind leader Christopher Wheeler of Addison and in a tie for 24th place. Wheeler drained nine birdies on the day to finish with an opening-round 64.

Texas-Arlington junior Paul Gonzalez is in second place after shooting a 5-under 67.

Argyle freshman Gaven Lane, who turns 15 on Sunday, and Logan Diomede, who just wrapped up his senior year at Argyle, each shot 73 and are tied for 38th.

Alex Isakson, a 2016 Argyle graduate, had a rough start after shooting 79.

The tournament runs through Sunday and is being played on DAC’s Jack Nicklaus-designed Blue Course for the first time in 16 years. It is the seventh Texas Golf Association major championship played at DAC and the third Texas Amateur. The tournament is a showcase of the state’s top amateurs.
