Argyle coach Brady Bell didn't want to put too much pressure on his team, so he didn't stress the need to be leading after Day 1 of the Class 4A state golf tournament at the Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay.
But when the Eagles won the state title each of the past two seasons, they had a Day 1 lead.
Monday in Marble Falls, the Eagles delivered anyway, posting three sub-80 scores on the way to a team score of 312, which secured them a valuable Day 1 lead.
"Anytime you have a cushion, you have some shots to play with." Bell said. "It's definitely a luxury. I'm going to tell the team that it's basically two shots per kid, and that goes away pretty quickly. One shot out of bounds or in the hazard, and it goes away quickly. It puts us in the driver seat that if we can repeat, it's going to force people to play this hard golf course aggressively."
Junior Luke Griggs paced the Eagles squad with a 74, good for third overall individually. Senior Parker Love and junior Will Gilster each posted a 79, which put them in a tie for 11th.
Sophomore Logan Diomede shot an 80 while sophomore Cole Wilson shot an 81.
The Eagles have an eight-stroke lead over second place Fredericksburg, who posted a 320. Robinson is third with a 327.
Bell said he heard the team talking, and they felt that there was still room for improvement. One more day like Monday, and the Eagles could be three-time defending state champions.
"Griggs played great golf," Bell said. "He had a triple or he would have shot under par. Sometimes with these guys, it can help you focus more. At the end, he came in with a really good round and that helped separate us from the other team. Everybody on the team had a couple holes that they played poorly on, but the guys feel like they can shoot lower than they did today. We just have to play like we're capable."
