Guyer forward JaKobe Coles, center, shoots over Mansfield Lake Ridge center Legend Barrett (22) on Tuesday in Grapevine. Coles scored 32 points as the Wildcats won the Class 6A playoff game 82-66.

GRAPEVINE — Mansfield Lake Ridge had no answer for Guyer junior JaKobe Coles in Tuesday night’s Class 6A Region I quarterfinal at Grapevine.

Coles, a four-star power forward listed at 6-9, was five inches taller than the Eagles’ biggest player, and the Wildcats exploited that advantage in the paint from the get-go en route to an 82-66 win.

Coles finished with 32 points, helping Guyer (31-4) advance to the Class 6A Region I tournament for the second straight year. The Wildcats will play Odessa Permian at 8 p.m. Friday at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.

“I just came in with a lot of confidence,” Coles said. “I knew I needed to have a big game. They didn’t have anybody as big as me, so I had to be dominant. My team played great. They fed me the ball and helped me get going, so it was really a team effort.”

Coles, who had 21 points in the first half, scored the Wildcats’ first nine points of the third quarter to spark a 13-2 run that gave Guyer a 20-point lead and put the game out of reach. His dominance in the paint carried over to the defensive end in the second half, and the Wildcats held Lake Ridge to two points through the first four minutes of the third.

Guyer’s offensive production was in stark contrast to the way the team played in a win over No. 9 Richardson Pearce, as the Wildcats connected on four 3-pointers against Lake Ridge after hitting eight against the Mustangs.

Michigan signee Jalen Wilson finished with 19 points and Oklahoma signee De’Vion Harmon had 15 to support the big night from Coles.

“We trusted our teammates,” Harmon said. “We’ve been saying that since the start of the year, and man, we’re peaking at the right time. We have to keep trusting each other like that and play defense like we’ve been playing. We’re three rounds down — four more wins to go.”

Guyer’s defense early in the second half was the key, as the Wildcats held Joey Madimba — who had 14 points in the first half — to two points in the third. Madimba finished with 21 points while Tahlik Chavez added 16 for the Eagles.

The Wildcats secured a spot in the 6A Region I tournament for the second time, and Friday’s game against Permian will be a rematch of last year’s regional semifinal that Guyer won 58-48.

The regional final is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s just another step to the goal we want to reach,” Guyer coach Grant Long said. “It’s one more round. Now we get to the fourth round and get to concentrate on Odessa Permian.”
