The Guyer boys basketball team and Argyle girls basketball team were the best in the Denton area from start to finish this year, and their success on the court was reflected on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ all-state and all-region lists released late Thursday.
Oklahoma signee De’Vion Harmon and Michigan signee Jalen Wilson were named to the Class 6A All-Region I team and also took home all-state honors for the second consecutive year after leading Guyer to the regional final and a 32-win season.
Guyer junior JaKobe Coles, a four-star recruit, also was named to the all-region team.
“They’re pillars of our program,” Guyer coach Grant Long said. “You see it by all of the team wins we’ve had and the individual accolades and records they’ve had. They’ve been big influences on guys to get in the gym and make basketball big in Denton. When you have high-level players like that, it makes other players want to follow suit.”
Argyle juniors Rhyle McKinney and Brooklyn Carl added TABC all-state honors to their collections after being named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association all-state team earlier this week. McKinney and Carl played an integral role in Argyle’s run to a fifth consecutive state championship and will return for one more run at a title as seniors.
“Those two girls are very deserving based on what they’ve done over the last few years,” Argyle coach Chance Westmoreland said. “Brooklyn has been a starter for the last three years, and Rhyle has been a big-time player the last two. It’s huge what they were able to do this year, and it all goes back to the consistency they had game in and game out.”
Wilson, Harmon, Carl and McKinney were the only area players to earn TABC all-state honors, but 10 additional players were named to the all-region teams.
Argyle seniors Max Valentino and Brandon White were named to the 4A All-Region I team after guiding Argyle to the regional quarterfinals. Pilot Point’s Mason Sheppard, a key part of the Bearcats’ Cinderella run to the region quarterfinals, was named to the Class 3A All-Region II team, and Aubrey’s Hayden Smith was named to the 4A All-Region II team.
On the girls side, Ponder’s Kaia Williams and Kelley Akins earned 3A All-Region II honors after helping the Lady Lions win a share of the District 9-3A title and advance to the area round. Krum’s Tori Hamilton was named to the 4A Region I team, and Sanger’s Chloe Malone and Aubrey’s Kaia Saylor were named to the 4A Region II team.
