Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker stated that he has been fully briefed about the Robert Mueller investigation and that it is almost wrapped up. I find those remarks deeply concerning coming from someone who spent substantial air time criticizing and delegitimizing the investigation.
Mueller must conduct the investigation into President Trump’s 2016 campaign and election, no matter where the threads lead. Political hacks must not interfere, delay, bury, starve for resources, or in any other way obstruct the progress of the investigation. There is too much public evidence related to the influence of Russia, the conflicts of interest among Trump, his family and his associates, and the outright corruption and malfeasance by many within the Trump inner circle (and very likely Trump and his family).
Our democratic institutions are at an inflection point. Will the protections around the ideals of our democracy become stronger and more robust — or will we become subjects of the next big authoritarian regime?
