A volunteer picks up trash as part of last year's Great American Clean-up event in Denton.

Denton volunteers rolled with the changes as Keep Denton Beautiful rescheduled its 31st annual Great American Cleanup to March 31 because of bad weather.

That day, 522 volunteers young and old removed 3.5 tons of litter from Denton parks, trails, roads and school campuses.

Keep Denton Beautiful estimated that participants volunteered 1,002 hours, worth about $24,739.

Camp Gladiator and Worlds of Wow earned the distinction of "Most Bags Collected," with both collecting 30 bags of trash and recycling. The Koan School sent the most participants, at 49 volunteers. Morse Street Baptist Church earned the distinction for the oddest item found, an entire toilet.

Denton joined 20,000 other communities in organizing the local cleanup event.
