Beto O’Rourke, the Democrat challenging Republican Greg Abbott in the governor's race, attracted so many University of North Texas students to his college tour stop in Denton on Monday that the university had to open several other rooms for his stump speech. Well over 500 students attended the event, according to O’Rourke’s Instagram posts. After the speech, students stood in line for a photo with the candidate. O’Rourke’s considerable social media team captured portions of the meet-and-greet for his TikTok account.
O’Rourke scored two big celebrity endorsements before he arrived in Denton: Willie Nelson and pop-rock megastar Harry Styles, who played a guitar bearing a “Beto for Texas” sticker that got a close-up on the Jumbotron during his concert in Austin. While Styles pointed to O’Rourke in the audience, fans cheered for the Texas Democrat.
