Hickory Street barricades

City utility crews are done with their work at West Hickory Street from Avenue C to Avenue B. The barricades remain, however, as UNT is also making improvements in the area.

Both the city of Denton and the University of North Texas planned construction improvements for that area to occur at about the same time last year. The city's work is done at the intersection, but UNT's is not.

UNT spokeswoman Leigh Ann Gullett said their crews barricaded Avenue C as the city came through with its improvements on West Hickory Street. UNT crews are working on a new monument and landscape for the entrance into campus at that spot.

The job was supposed to be finished in February, but crews found fiber optic cable line in several locations where new trees are being planted, Gullett said. The university needed the telecommunications company to come in and lower the line. In addition, rain and cold slowed the masonry work, she said.

The new completion date is scheduled for April 1, according to university documents.

Denton spokeswoman Sarah Kuechler said the city expects the street to be reopened in the beginning of April.
