Celebrate the first day of 2018 by trying something new at Ray Roberts Lake State Park on Monday.

At the Johnson Branch unit, rangers have organized a "First Day Fish" trout derby. From 10 a.m. to noon, children of all ages can learn to fish in a pond stocked with rainbow trout. Rangers encourage participants to bring their own poles, if possible, but there will be some fishing poles and tackle available.

The event includes hot chocolate. For more information, contact Lauren Bullington by phone at 940-637-2294 or email at

At the Isle du Bois Unit, rangers organized a "First Day Hike." Beginning at 2 p.m. at the Hawthorne Campground parking lot, visitors will hike 2.2 miles on the Randy Bell Scenic Trail as a ranger explains native flora and fauna. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes, and bring water.

For more information, contact Ricardo Torres by phone at 940-686-2148, ext. 258, or email at
