Denton resident Donald Norman-Cox will present a historical program about Juneteenth at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Blagg-Huey Library on the Texas Woman’s University campus.

Cox’s free program, “Juneteenth 101,” takes a closer look at the annual observance that commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day the U.S. Army sailed into Galveston to ensure that Texans would comply with the Emancipation Proclamation. Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, effectively freeing the slaves in Confederate states as the Civil War raged. The proclamation freed more than 3 million people.
