The Denton Fire Department carries up to eight injectable vials of the overdose drug naloxone, or Narcan, on each ambulance. The antidote reverses the effects of opiates during an overdose.

Organizations and public officials will be on the Denton Square on Saturday, Aug. 31, for North Texas Overdose Awareness Day.

The event is Denton's second time to participate in the international event, which is observed in more than 30 countries. Sharon Roland organizes the event together with her other children in memory of her son, Randy, who died of an overdose in 2016.

About 30 information tables will be on the Square, and organizers will demonstrate how to administer Narcan and pass out free doses. In emergencies, Narcan can treat a narcotics overdose and prevent death.

The event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31 on the lawn of the Courthouse on the Square.
