A 33-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon after a three-car collision on the Interstate 35E bridge over Lewisville Lake.

Christine Schmidt of Carrollton died in the intensive care unit at Medical City Denton, where she was being treated for injuries from the crash, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Hickory Creek police said another woman was seriously injured in the wreck, the first of two crashes that left southbound traffic snarled through midday Wednesday. She also was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, and her condition is unknown.

The first crash was reported just after 9 a.m. between the Lewisville Lake Bridge and Garden Ridge Boulevard, according to Hickory Creek police Sgt. John Causseaux. A Hickory Creek patrol officer was the first on the scene, Causseaux said.

A second crash occurred shortly after, just north of the first.

Causseaux said investigators still are going over the crash data, and he could not speculate on the cause.

“Right now, we’re still in the very preliminary stages,” Causseaux said.

All lanes were reopened after 2 p.m., and as of 2:30 p.m., Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed traffic flowing normally.
