State Rep. Michelle Beckley, D-Carrollton, announced Tuesday she would seek the Democratic nomination for Texas lieutenant governor.

She flipped the traditionally Republican District 65, which includes much of southern Denton County, in 2018.

She previously announced a run for U.S. House District 24, which is currently held by Republican Rep. Beth Van Duyne of Irving. Beckley changed course after proposed redistricting maps indicated she would have a harder time winning local races, according to the Texas Tribune.

Candidate filing opened Saturday for Texans, and Denton County Judge Andy Eads was early out the gates filing for reelection.

He first took office as county judge in 2019.

Candidates have until Dec. 13 to file for a spot on the March 2022 primary ballots.

Jan. 31 will be the last day to register to vote. Valentine's Day will be the first day of in-person early voting with the last day being Feb. 25.

Primary election day will be March 1; runoffs will be held May 24; and Election Day is Nov. 8.
