Update Monday 10:15 a.m.:

Officials identified Joseph Patrick Whelan, 53, of Corinth, as the individual killed after being struck Monday evening by a Denton County Transportation Authority A-train in the 2300 block of Brinker Road.

Whelan was pronounced dead at a Denton hospital. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner listed the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries due to the collision.

An investigation into what caused the incident was underway Monday night, police said.

DCTA officials said the A-train was traveling at 40 mph at the time of the collision, applying its emergency brakes and blowing the horn. Crossing arms were down prior to the collision.

According to DCTA spokeswoman Adrienne Hamilton, there were two passengers, a conductor and an engineer on the train and no injuries were reported among them. A bus bridge between MedPark and the Downtown Denton Transit Center began a little after 8 p.m. and train service resumed at 9:40 p.m.

No other details were made available from either police or DCTA.
