Usually, when pet owners freak out and run the streets calling for an animal who is right there in the house, the pet in question is a cat. Keldrick Scott, the CEO of Gitmo Music, spent two hours last Sunday hollering up and down Denton streets for his dog. His dog, Phoenix, had fallen behind Scott’s sofa and gotten stuck. Maybe he was too embarrassed to bark or make his predicament known? After the search and rescue operation, Scott told his friends, “I need a drink.”

Greg Thorne, the bar manager at Hannah’s Off the Square, did an interview with Houston journalist Tanji Patton for her show, Good Taste with Tanji. The streaming show follows Patton to essential bars and restaurants in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and the Hill Country. The local restaurant said Patton and her crew filmed a segment about its “by the glass wine system.”

Denton resident and Peterbilt design staffer Eric Tucker spied one of his truck hood designs on an episode of The Office. Dunder-Mifflin Paper salesman and Assistant to the Regional Manager Dwight K. Shrute is frolicking just outside the warehouse — in his boxer briefs — with his idol and boss, Michael Scott. We don’t have an episode title or number, but Tucker posted a screen shot of the sighting.

A lot of Denton residents probably don’t like what they see as California culture, but a company called OhmConnect has found some similarities between Texans and Californians: careful energy consumption. Locals have been vocal about the price of cooling homes and businesses this summer, and OhmConnect (which works with California energy providers to reward Golden Coast residents for saving energy) found that Texans make it a point to save energy, along with Georgia and Florida. Texas ranks fourth in the company’s 2018 Energy Conservation Index.

Who loves an ice cold, foamy beer after a run? We mean besides the Denton Area Running Club — they’ve proven their commitment to post-run brewskies. Save the date: The West Hickory Street Octoberfest & 5K is slated for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at Caskey’s Bar & Grill, 1206 W. Hickory St. And yes, this event used to be known as the Fry Street Oktoberfest. The run costs $22 in advance or $30 on the day of the race.

Denton residents (and out-of-towners, to be sure) will gather for a memorial service for former Denton Mayor Euline Brock at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, at 2100 S. Interstate 35 E. Brock died from congestive heart failure on July 1. She served three terms on the city council from 1992 to 1998. She was mayor from 2000 to 2006.

Boy, Beto O’Rourke is keeping a busier road schedule than a pop star in his mission to unseat Texas Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. He’s been criss-crossing the state on a campaign tour, taped a segment of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that aired Wednesday night and hit the road again for more campaign spots. O’Rourke, a Democrat representing District 16 in Congress, isn’t projected to win ruby red Texas. But he’s campaigning like he means it. He’s listed as a headliner for the Buffalo Tree Festival on Oct. 7 at the Main Street Garden in Dallas. The festival has some Denton-adjacent musicians on the bill (Polyphonic Spree, Sarah Jaffe) and gubernatorial candidate Lupe Valdez, the longtime sheriff of Dallas County is another Democrat slated to be at the event. The festival is hosted by the Homegrown Festival and the Dallas County Democratic Party.

Parting shot

“We love Edgar Allan Poe because he portrays universal human emotions like loss, grief, unrequited love, burying your enemy alive in the cellar and being scared out of your mind by a bird.”
