Texas Woman’s University’s PIONERAS program has been selected as a national finalist for the 2021 Examples of Excelencia award.
The award, which was founded in 2005, recognizes college-level programs with evidence of effectiveness in accelerating Latino student success.
The program received 145 submissions this year from 23 states and Puerto Rico, and PIONERAS ranked among the 21 finalists selected. The four winners of the Examples of Excelencia award will be announced via the virtual Celebración de Excelencia on Oct. 28.
PIONERAS is a teacher training program dedicated to teaching aspiring educators how to teach Spanish-speaking English language learners. The PIONERAS program is a collaboration between TWU and Denton ISD and was funded by a $2.2 million scholarship from the U.S. Department of Education.
The program serves 42 students for TWU and 24 teachers in 12 participating DISD schools.
