Area retired school personnel host meeting

The Lewisville Area Retired School Personnel Association will meet at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 21 in the Lewisville ISD Administrative Center, located at 1565 W. Main St.

Tim Lee, executive director of the Texas Retired Teacher Association, will be the guest speaker. Light refreshments will be served, and all attendees are eligible for door prize drawings.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a new or gently used book for the Children’s Book Project, as well as a nonperishable food item for a local food bank.

Denton Calvary Academy

Drama Club advances to state level

Performing “Digging up Dessa” by Laura Schellhardt, the Denton Calvary Academy Drama Club placed second, qualifying it to advance to the state level.

The club competed Oct. 18 in Division III, District 2 of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools one-act play competition, which was held at Ryan High School.

The state competition will be held Nov. 12 in Kerrville.

Students Summer Roberson, Avery Rankin and Bethany Crouch were all awarded All-Star Cast status, while Chase King received honorable mention. Ethan Davis was awarded the All-Star Crew distinction.

Other cast members were Jake West, Olivia Neale and Kara Rankin. Andrea Avery Ray directed.

The cast and crew will put on two performances — beginning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. — at Ryan High on Saturday. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.

Denton ISD

Teacher named finalist for national award

Bridget Matamoros, math teacher and department chairwoman at Guyer High School, is one of six finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Each awardee will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation, among other prizes.

Krum ISD

Coat drive ongoing

Donations are open for the district’s Coats for Kids drive.

Collection boxes are at the Krum Early Education Center, as well as Dyer and Dodd elementary schools.

The drive runs through Nov. 21, and organizers ask that donors bring new coats with tags still attached for students 5 years old and older.
