Denton ISD will allow all enrolled students to eat for free through the 2021-22 school year.

The district is able to do so through an extended U.S. Department of Agriculture waiver.

Denton ISD made the announcement Monday afternoon. The USDA announced on April 20 that districts could take advantage of fully reimbursable meals through June 30, 2022.

Participation effectively enrolls all students, regardless of their family's income or other factors, in the federal free and reduced-price meal program.

Schools still will be required to adhere to the federal government's strict rubric for what constitutes a meal, but participating districts will receive "higher-than-normal meal reimbursements for every meal they serve," according to the USDA news release.

Neighboring Argyle ISD recently opted into the program for elementary schoolchildren.
