$3,500 awarded to local students

The Denton County Branch of the NAACP had its 39th annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Feb. 1 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Denton Convention Center, where they handed out its yearly awards, including scholarships to local students that totaled $3,500. Scholarships were awarded to, from left, Lyric Shelton, Austin Jackson, Dahnemah Blair, Terren Heard, Kimberly Santana Parrilla and Tristen Mack. The scholarships were sponsored by the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce, Our Infinite Company, North Central Texas College, Kenneth Homer, Eaties Catering and an anonymous donor. Other awards handed out included the Fred Moore Award for outstanding community service, which went to Reginald Logan, pastor, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Sanger; and Legal Address Team received the Irene Price Award for its commitment to assisting residents to address injustice, bias and discrimination.
