Sequencer

A nanopore sequencer, used to sequence coronavirus samples, is seen at the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory in Omaha, on Dec. 2, 2021. More states are finding cases of the omicron variant.

Denton County Public Health Monday confirmed another 828 local residents had tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

That’s the largest single-day increase reported since Sept. 7, 2021. It’s also the 11th-highest increase reported over the past nearly two years.

Monday’s announcement, which included numbers from Friday through Monday, raised the countywide infection total to 116,399.

For comparison, DCPH confirmed only 233 infections this past Tuesday, which included infections from the previous Friday through Tuesday.

The spike in cases comes amid the surge of the omicron variant and a widespread testing shortage.

Data included in the chart below is from Denton County Public Health, which estimated 6,552 county residents were still actively infected with the coronavirus Monday. Data for the rolling average chart below comes from DCPH and an analysis from the Denton Record-Chronicle.
