For the past eight years, Denton residents Romona and Eddie Beaver, have operated their estate sale business with a recurring question in mind, often asked by their customers: “Do you have a store that will sell the furniture that does not get sold?”
The answer presented itself when the couple signed their new lease for a storefront on the downtown Square.
VaChelle’s on the Square is set to open its doors to customers at 10 a.m. Saturday at 121 N. Elm St., the former home of Garden Gate. The Beavers’ home decor and furniture consignment store is named after their daughters, Valerie and Michelle.
Opening a shop downtown had been a dream of the Beavers’ for quite some time, Romona said. Once they found the location, it was a perfect fit.
“God always has the plan — we have prayed over it and just felt this was the right direction,” Romona said, sitting next to her husband in their new business. “I looked at another location over by TWU and I just felt like it wasn’t the right place. … When I walked in here, I knew this is where I needed to be.”
As for what customers can expect during VaChelle’s grand opening next weekend, Romona said she wants to provide a fun and relaxing shopping experience. Also important, Eddie said, is that customers are treated with courtesy and respect. The Beavers will work to assist a customer who may be looking for something they don’t have.
“If there is a need that someone has that they don’t see in the store, there may be someone that we know that has something and we can go out and meet that [customer’s] need,” Eddie said.
The store will also sell items from vendors such as Shop the Barn, a vintage furniture and antique goods dealer, and Little Red Hen, in order to showcase a “diversity of items,” Romona said.
“We want to support Denton — we want people to buy locally rather than having to travel out of town,” she said. “We do mom-and-pop shopping whenever we can support local businesses, they’re the backbone.”
VaChelle’s on the Square will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and will be closed Sunday and Monday.
