Tolls could boost I-35E project
Federal and state leaders, frustrated by delays on the expansion of Interstate 35E through parts of Denton and Dallas counties, said Tuesday that a private contractor and tolls could be the keys to fast-tracking the project.

The Denton City Council voted Tuesday to hire Lubbock’s longtime city attorney to lead Denton’s legal department. Anita Burgess is expected to start as Denton’s city attorney Oct. 6. She will replace former City Attorney Ed Snyder, who resigned June 30 to pursue a new career as a high school teacher and football coach.

Tomasa Garcia, shown in front of artwork in her home near Sanger, has founded businesses and a monthly publication and helped found the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

She still laughs when she thinks of the West Texas town where she grew up. “It is called Tornillo [tor-NEE-yo],” said Tomasa Garcia, sitting in her office on Dallas Drive. “It means ‘screw’ in Spanish, like the screw from the screwdriver,” she said.


Calhoun due for update  
Construction is expected to begin Sept. 29 in rebuilding of the south wing of Calhoun Middle School — the only building to be demolished and upgraded on the campus.

Supplies bringing shoppers to stores
With classes starting next week, shopping for school supplies during the annual sales tax-free weekend topped a number of residents’ “to do” lists. “We had a lot of college students with all of the dorm move-ins,” said Paul Jenkins, a manager at Best Buy off Loop 288. Texas took a three-day break from charging state and local sales taxes for clothing and shoes, but other kinds of retailers saw increased sales too.

Blotter: Woman assaulted after unusually strong drinks
Two men at a friend’s apartment sexually assaulted a woman early Friday, she told Denton police. The woman said she went to the apartment in the 300 block of North Loop 288 with friends and began drinking alcohol with the woman who lives there and four men she didn’t know. She believes the drinks were mixed very strong, she said, because she had only two and became inebriated.

Dropout rates improve slightly
Denton’s dropout rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point between the class of 2006 and the class of 2007, but district leaders say there’s room to improve. The Texas Education Agency released dropout rates as part of its annual accountability ratings. Jamie Wilson, deputy superintendent for the Denton school district, said dropouts are a main focus in everything the district does, and it wants to make sure students receive a diploma and graduate from high school.

Mayor wants talk on terms

Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs says he still wants to begin talks about changing City Council term limits, even though there may not be time to get the issue on the Nov. 4 ballot. The council will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss Burroughs’ plan to do away with the existing limit of three consecutive two-year terms. In its place, Burroughs is proposing a change to two four-year terms, or even three three-year terms, to allow for more continuity of service and reduce the recurrence of elections.

Chainsaw masterpieces
Give him a block of wood, and Burt Fleming can use his chainsaw to make it art. With a lot of noise and dust and wood chips flying about, Fleming carved out eagles, pelicans, frogs, American Indians and a familiar insurance-selling gecko on Friday as part of ongoing demonstrations of his unique carving skills at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo.

Sore sight for all eyes

The lot bordered by Fry, Oak, Welch and Hickory streets sits vacant. Development of Fry Street Village was halted when the city of Denton denied plans for a drive-through.

Dirt and weeds fill a fenced-off vacant lot on Fry Street, once considered the premier hangout for Denton college students. Several tattered signs promising development still stand on the block bordered by Fry, Oak, Welch and Hickory streets after plans stalled in December of last year — the aftermath of a contentious fight between activists, residents, politicians and an out-of-town developer.

Employment rates top average
Unemployment rates for July show Denton and Denton County faring just under state levels and significantly better than the national unemployment rate of 5.7 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. For the city of Denton, the 4.2 percent unemployment rate for July is lower than in the past two summers. Last year, July’s rate came in at 4.3 percent, down from the July 2006 rate of 4.5 percent.

Bondsman apprehended at jail

A Denton bail bondsman is back in Denton County Jail after walking out of a court-ordered drug rehabilitation facility and walking into the jail lobby Thursday to demand that his seized property be returned. William Lee “Mitch” Mitchell III, 38, is being held without bail after Judge Bruce McFarling signed an order Thursday declaring his bond insufficient because he violated the terms.


Blotter: Police arrest two more in home robbery cases
Denton police took two men into custody Thursday on aggravated robbery charges and said they have more suspects in a recent series of home-invasion robberies. Detective Sgt. Jim Brett said Friday that Jeffrey Clark Stinger, 22, and Larry David Bain II, 25, were arrested on the charges. Carlton Kyle Mason, 22, already had been arrested in connection with the same robberies.

Why do weather forecasts always mention the barometer and its trend? The barometer measures the pressure exerted on a location of the Earth’s surface by the air mass above it. When you look at a weather map, you may see a blue “H” or a red “L.” They represent the approximate centers of high- or low-pressure cells. There is no particular number at which the pressure is considered or designated to be high or low, as they are relative to each other.

City negotiating with Lubbock attorney
Talks are under way to bring Lubbock’s city attorney to Denton, a city spokesman said Thursday. The city is negotiating a contract with Anita Burgess to become Denton’s city attorney, city spokesman John Cabrales said. The City Council could vote as early as Tuesday to appoint a new attorney, “depending on how the negotiations go,” he said.

Before people can enjoy a rocking and roping good time at this year’s North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, most attendees will spend time finding a place to park. That’s where Danny Brumley and his crew come in handy. While livestock handlers ready their animals, bounce houses are aired up and food is cooked, Brumley, the parking coordinator, will work to provide as much parking as he can for the duration of the fair.


SPAN short on funding
Even with a $15,000 boost from the county commissioners, the transportation division of SPAN, which serves Denton County residents, still remains on financially shaky ground. SPAN — or Special Programs for Aging Needs — is looking for help to cover 40 percent of its operating costs, said Jennifer Sorenson of the organization.

Good news, bad news on county foreclosures
While residential foreclosures continue to climb in Denton County, a glimmer of hope prevails in auction sales, according to a foreclosure analyst. A total of 400 homes were listed for the upcoming Sept. 2 auction, up 27 percent from the same time last year, according to the Foreclosure Listing Service Inc. Comparing the third-quarter numbers for July through September, residential foreclosure listings in Denton County were up 41 percent from the same period last year.

UNT professor back home

What started out as an optimistic voyage ended Monday in uncertainty as a trip to the Eurasian country of Georgia crumbled in chaos. Returning to the country where he’s spent summers for the last 15 years, Reid Ferring, a University of North Texas geography professor, felt a sense of happiness, he said. For yet another year he would return to his work of recovering human fossils dating back 1.8 million years while also seeing the faces of old comrades, attending a friend’s wedding and spending time with a young Georgian girl for whom he was named godfather one year ago.


Supply shortage stalls county road construction
Paving work for some roads in Denton County has stalled because of a shortage of petroleum-based construction materials, and as supplies dwindle, prices increase. The base cost of one product in particular, emulsified asphalt, has increased by 75 percent over the last five months, said Beth Fleming, director of purchasing for Denton County.

Tree timeline may get axed
Denton may abandon its timeline for approving an overhauled tree preservation code after the proposal faced criticism Wednesday at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting. The revised tree code was scheduled for an Aug. 27 public hearing before the commission, but that could be delayed in light of commissioners’ concerns, said Brian Lockley, the city’s planning manager.

Blotter: Report: Chat leads to choking
Denton police arrested a man on a charge of aggravated assault after an incident at a mobile home park Tuesday night. Officers responded to a report of a man choking a woman in the 5300 block of East McKinney Street about 9 p.m. Paramedics arrived and began treating a woman with a large cut on one hand, and she was eventually taken to a hospital emergency room.

U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, joined Denton city leaders Wednesday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a $1.68 million refurbishing of Cedar Street off the downtown Square.

Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home opens its doors at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for a tour at its campus at 1304 Bernard St.

Tax rate dips, but home values rise
Denton County homeowners would pay, on average, nearly $46 more in county taxes if commissioners adopt the proposed tax rate next month. Commissioners opted Tuesday to propose a tax rate of $0.23577 per $100 of property valuation.

For 72 hours beginning Friday, shoppers across Texas will receive a reprieve from paying sales taxes on certain items during the state’s annual tax-free weekend. Most clothing and footwear priced under $100 is exempt from sales tax during the three-day period, so residents will save about $8 for every $100 they spend.

Council member gets waiver on hydrants
ARGYLE — A Town Council member won’t have to install fire hydrants on her property, despite a council vote last year to require them. The Argyle council voted 2-1 on Tuesday to waive a fire hydrant requirement on land owned by member Dona Schroetke after she requested an exemption. Schroetke, a real estate agent, abstained from the council discussion and vote.

U.S. court orders trial in lawsuit against DA
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has reversed the decision of a lower federal court to dismiss a civil rights suit against District Attorney Paul Johnson, his first assistant and a criminal lawyer. In an opinion handed down Friday, the court sent the suit filed by Denton bail bondsman William “Mitch” Mitchell back to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District with orders to try the case on its merits.
