Blotter: Reports aimed at garage

08:00 AM CDT on Thursday, August 7, 2008

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Denton police say they are investigating numerous complaints against an auto repair shop in the 3300 block of East University Drive.

Detective Sgt. Brad Curtis said a detective is working with the district attorney’s office to determine whether the complaints, which mostly involve alleged deceptive practices, can be prosecuted criminally.

“We’ve had multiple complaints,” Curtis said. “We definitely are looking into this.”

The latest complaint was reported Tuesday. A woman said she looked on the Internet to find a good price on a transmission repair. She found the Denton business and obtained an estimate of $1,597 for the work.

But later she learned her cost would be $3,300, according to the report. She said she didn’t want the work done and asked to have her car back.

But the repair shop employee told her that her transmission was in pieces in the back of the shop. There would be a minimum $900 payment for the work already done before the shop would release her car, she learned. The woman paid the $900 and the parts of her transmission were placed in the trunk of her car, which then had to be towed to another repair shop.

Other reports

600 block of Lakey Street — Two men told police they were shot at as they ran from men in a car early Tuesday.

The victims said they were walking along the street about 2:40 a.m. to get rid of energy because they had been drinking energy drinks. A car with two men inside pulled up beside them. They didn’t know the men, they said, but the men began shouting at them and one said he would shoot them.

The victims ran, with the car in pursuit, they said. They ran through a park and became separated. One continued running with the car on the nearby street until he came to the police department, where he ran inside. The other said he lay down behind headstones in a cemetery until he felt it was safe, then he too went to the police department.

3900 block of Morse Street — The owner of a business said that over the past year an employee apparently used a company debit card to obtain cash advances of about $40,000. The employee, who no longer works for the business owner, also is accused of taking a big-screen television from a rental house, according to the police report.
